We’ve experienced the Firestarter story before. There’s the original novel by Stephen King, of course, and then there was the 1984 film adaptation starring a young Drew Barrymore as the psychically pyrotechnic-inclined girl, Charlie.
The 1984 movie was, well, not great. Universal Pictures, however, has decided to revisit the story with a reboot set to premiere in theater and on Peacock this Friday, May 13.
Will this new film be better than the first? We’ll have to wait a couple of days to find out, but in the meantime, we have two clips of the new Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) starting some fires whether her dad (Zac Efron), wants her to or not.
In Firestarter, Charlie and her parents are on the run from a shadow government organization that wants to use Charlie’s powers for nefarious purposes.
The first clip, shown above, has Charlie blindfolded and at knifepoint. It also looks like her dad and one of the operatives sent to capture her (Michael Greyeyes) have powers of their own as well. Charlie, however, starts fires. And we see her do so here.
If one fire-starting wasn’t enough for you, I have good news! We have another clip from the new Firestarter that once again shows Charlie creating a conflagration.

This clip reveals that young Charlie isn’t completely in control of her powers, which is understandable. Her inability to keep them to a less-than-smoldering level, however, will attract the attention of the aforementioned secret government agency.
The film is directed by Keith Thomas (The Vigil) from a screenplay adaptation by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills). It’s produced by Jason Blum (Halloween, The Invisible Man) for Blumhouse and Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Constantine) for Weed Road Pictures. The score is composed by the legendary John Carpenter (Halloween, Christine, The Fog) and his fellow Halloween composers Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.
Will the agency get Charlie and her parents? Will Charlie, in fact, start more fires? You’ll have to watch the movie in theaters and/or on Peacock starting May 13 to find out.
